learning French

As the school year comes to a close, many parents are looking for resources to continue their child’s French curriculum. Parents who do not speak the language want to provide their children with exposure to it, especially if their kids are in French immersion or extended French programs. Luckily, there are some fantastic (and free!) websites out there! Here are three engaging and educational online resources to explore with your child.

Mini TFO

Mini TFO

This website has a simple layout and is very easy to navigate. It gives children access to a wide range of free games, including puzzles and online music activities. The games are narrated in French, and children will have the chance to practise and strengthen their listening skills and strategies while playing. Mini TFO also offers several French video clips. Some of the videos are episodes of animated shows, while others teach kids about topics like cooking and animals. Overall, this website is an excellent resource and a great choice for kids in the primary grades.

Radio Canada

Radio Canada French Resources

Radio Canada has a children’s platform with two different websites to choose from. The first is Zone jeunesse, which is geared towards slightly older children and pre-teens. Kids can find French games, video clips and television episodes here. There is also a blog component where children can read about topics that interest them, like the arts and sports. The other website, Zone des petits, was created with younger children in mind. It has many of the same features but the characters and subject matter are more appropriate for primary students. Zone des petits also has an activities section with eye-catching colouring pages and French activity sheets!

Idéllo

If you are searching for videos in French, this website is the perfect choice! Idéllo has videos for students of all grade levels! You can find videos using the age and topic options, and a variety of other filters help to facilitate your search. There are many fantastic series to try out, including “Amélie et compagnie,” a show about a 9-year-old girl, her clever pet cat and their adventures. Many of the videos on this site showcase French culture, which is a major focus in programs like French immersion. Your child will enjoy finding new and exciting shows to watch and you can rest assured that they are continuing to listen and learn in French.
