Oak Learners is Granted a Water Rangers Freshwater Testing Kit for World Oceans Week!

by | May 31, 2024 | Education, School Life

From June 1 to 9, 2024, Ocean Week is a time to engage in events, learning activities, and community initiatives that highlight the importance of our oceans and their connection to our daily lives. This year, Oak Learners was selected to receive the Ocean Week Canada Grant towards the purchase of a Freshwater Testing Kit from Water Rangers!

For the month of June, students at Oak Learners are focused on the sustainability & life of Canadian waters. We are focusing on:

  • conservation
  • plastics – microplastics – garbage patch
  • layers of the ocean
  • rocks, geology, glaciers
  • tides & the moon
  • currents & weather systems
  • buoyency – salt water vs plain water
  • water systems
  • salt water desalination

We frequently take trips to the Humber River, the Mimico Creek & Lake Ontario during our inquiry-based units and we will expand the unit for Ocean Week Canada to include water monitoring with Water Rangers equipment.

Stay tuned to see how our students apply their classroom research to real-life water testing and analysis in our own community!

Two students from Oak Learners have their artwork featured at this year’s Tis the Season Art Show at the Assembly Hall at Humber College. Featuring art created by students from local schools, the works in this exhibition speaks to the seasonal changes from autumn to winter, like snowfalls and long periods of darkness, and the cultural traditions they help shape. The exhibition is open from November 19 to December 18, 2024.
