Oak Learners - interactive online learning opportunities for preschoolers

One of the most popular programs at Oak Learners for the past three years has been our Kindergarten Readiness program. This unique programs hosts 2.5-4yr olds for one, two or three mornings per week in a small class environment that explores a variety of arts and academic activities.

With a maximum of only 6 children in the class, the ECE teacher has a unique opportunity to work individually with students to focus on learning key skills that are important to success throughout their school journey. A large emphasis is placed on building independence, a skill that is ever-important in the large kindergarten classes we are seeing in the public school system. In a small class environment, children are better set up to learn how to navigate friendships and learning challenges without the need for constant adult intervention.

Educators at Oak Learners understand that children are natural learners and are born problem solvers. The Reggio Emilia philosophy of early childhood education shows us that presenting children with learning opportunities, they will construct their own learning through asking questions and exploring their environment.

During the time of the COVID-19 outbreak, we decided to bring this program online and present children and their parents with interactive online learning opportunities that mimic the learning that occurs every day at Oak Learners.

Exploring the World Around Us

The best way for children to learn something is to help them create meaning from the lesson by connecting it to their life and the world around them. This can be achieved by using everyday items for teaching counting, like Cheerios on the table or cars parked on the street. This helps connect abstract concepts like numbers and quantity to tangible objects that a young child can see, touch and explore. At Oak Learners, we love presenting objects to children and letting them explore and create all klinds of new things with them. Teachers provide guiding questions or prompts, but we also follow the child’s lead and let them direct where the learning will continue.

Benefits of Yoga for Children

Yoga has become a daily activity for many children around the world. It teaches children to become aware of their body and their breath while also learning key gross motor skills like balance, flexibility and strength. At Oak Learners, we draw from several different style of yoga practice, including Mini-Me Yoga, and our daily practices focus on making exercise fun and engaging.

Here’s a sample of what yoga looks like for our preschoolers.

Featuring art created by students from local schools, the works in this exhibition speaks to the seasonal changes from autumn to winter, like snowfalls and long periods of darkness, and the cultural traditions they help shape. The exhibition is open from November 19 to December 18, 2024.
