Local Hikes and Hidden Gems for Family Fun

At Oak Learners a big part of their curriculum is implemented in the outdoors outside of the typical classroom environment.

Children need the opportunity to get up and move throughout the day rather than sitting at their desks for long periods of time, and Oak Learners can provide just that! Giving children the opportunity to be outside of the classroom environment is important as it allows them to be more open to learning and loving it. Incorporating outdoor learning could make the world of a difference for children and enhancing their learning.

So, what does the outdoor learning at Oak Learners involve?

The teachers create purposeful experiences for the children with part of the lesson within the classroom along with the outdoor portion. For example, they were doing a project based on the election and completed the work they needed to do inside such as the math aspect which integrated the use of graphs and how they can collect the data that is needed. During English, they worked on different ways they could ask questions or approach people. After they went outside with their clipboards to complete the election experience. This consisted of all the children working together to work on each individual strengths to decide who does what portion of the experience.

This learning experience allowed the children to have an equal portion of the lesson inside with the opportunity to be outdoors. This was done by combining what they can do academically within the classroom and then they go outside to put it into practice!

“Children need the freedom and time to play. Play is not a luxury. Play is a necessity.” – Kay Redfield Jamison

Melissa Shoesmith

Hello, my name is Melissa Shoesmith and I am currently in my fifth semester at Seneca College in the Bachelors of Child Development program. I am completing my field placement here at Oak Learners. Working with children is the most rewarding job in the world in my opinion. I love having the opportunity to watch children learn and grow. I always want to make a positive impact on a child's life!
