Black Heritage Month at Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Center
The Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre hosted a 1-Day pop-up exhibition on February 22, 2024 from the Canadian Multicultural Innovators Museum! “Know the Past, Shape the Future” celebrates the power of creativity and innovation, showcasing the vast contributions of Black Canadians.
Oak Learners Middle School students had the opportunity to visit this exhibition and learn about the contributions of Black Canadians to innovation and development in a vast number of fields.
“A National Crime: Canada’s Indian Residential School System” at Lake Shore Grounds
Presented by “Legacy of Hope Foundation“, this exhibition explores the creation of the Residential School System, the experiences of the students, its impacts and traumas, and Indigenous-led political action, healing, and efforts toward Reconciliation.
Middle School students from Oak Learners visited this exhibition on February 26, 2024 to learn more about the significant impact of the Residential School System and how efforts towards reconciliation are moving forward.Â
“Grace: One Story of Thousands”Â
Grace: One Story of Thousands follows the life and experiences of Grace, one of the 1,511 people buried in the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital Cemetery at the corner of Horner and Evans Avenues in south Etobicoke. Through personal letters and surviving hospital records gathered by Grace’s great-niece, you are invited to pause and reflect on a life lived – not defined – by the institutional system in Ontario.
Oak Learners Middle School Students visited this exhibition to learn about the legacy of the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital through the records of one of its residents. This exhibition is on through July 2024 at the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre.
