COOK WITH OAK LEARNERS!πŸ‘©β€πŸ³πŸ₯˜

Every week students of Lake Shore Campus have a cooking lesson 🍽️ where they learn how to make meals by themselves related to their current unit of learning!

Last week our middle school students cooked “Bannock” – a type of fry bread, which originates from Scotland but was eventually adopted by the Indigenous peoples of Canada, particularly the MΓ©tis of western Canada. Bannock stems from the Gaelic word bannach, which means β€œmorsel,” a short and sweet but accurate description. The Scottish cooked the bread on a griddle called a Bannock Stone, which they placed on the floor in front of a fire. Here’s our recipe of this delicious bread!

Enjoy! πŸ˜‹

Bannock Recipe

  1. Mix flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. Work in the margarine using hands until you make a nice crumble. If you have Olivina margarine in your area, I find this makes for the best bannock.
  3. Gradually mix in enough milk to make soft but not sticky. Knead.
  4. Shape into a ball, place on a greased baking sheet, then flatten into a circle about 1 inch thick.
  5. Bake at 425Β°F (220Β°C) for 25 minutes or until lightly browned.
