Local Moms donate over $7500 in supplies and 149 showboxes in the 2nd Annual Lakeshore Moms Shoebox Project Supply Drive as well as over 1000 pieces of menstrual products for the Twelve Donations project.

Early in November, Kelly Bullock, a resident of Lakeshore Village in South Etobicoke and Founder of Inclusive Story Time, began rallying the members of a local Facebook Group, Lakeshore Moms, to begin collecting donations for the annual Shoebox Project supply drive.

Supporting the Shoebox Project

Almost 100 members of Lakeshore Moms came together to collect items, wrap, and fill 149 shoeboxes for The Shoebox Project. On December 8, 2019, over 30 of these moms got together for a wrapping and stuffing event! They spent hours sorting, wrapping, stuffing and writing heartfelt cards for the intended recipients of the shoeboxes. The resulting total of 149 boxes was almost triple the number of shoeboxes from last year’s event!

Oak Learners is an invaluable part of our success by providing the space to wrap and assemble the boxes and allowing members of our group to connect which each other while doing good for our community. Oak Learners is also a not-for-profit organization dedicated to enriching and enhancing the education of children and their families through Academic and Arts-based programming.

The shoeboxes were picked up by the Shoebox Project GTA West on December 12 and divulged that he majority of the Lakeshore Moms Shoeboxes will stay in the local community to furnish the ENTIRE Women’s Habitat Christmas Party. It is extremely special to know that local moms are helping local women (also many of them moms!) have a special Christmas.

There is still an over 500 box shortfall for the GTA West chapter of the Shoebox project. The rising cost of living in the city of Toronto is making it difficult for women to stay in their homes. As a community, have so much capacity to do more next year and the Lakeshore Moms are committed to making this an annual project for the group to continue to support even more local women have a special Christmas.

Supporting Twelve Donations

Members of the Lakeshore Moms group also donated menstrual supplies for Twelve Donations, a very unique organization that delivers menstrual products (pads, tampons, cups) to shelters all over Toronto. Part of their mission is to close the gap on a $3,000,000 shortfall for menstrual hygiene products for menstruators in Toronto shelters. Lakeshore Moms were able to collect 1,043 pieces of menstrual supplies. This may sound like a lot of menstrual products, but it is only enough to supply one large shelter in the city for one month.

Additional donations of hotel toiletries/samples were donated to The Period Purse Project. Two large bags of products were donated to help their initiative in delivering hygienic supplies throughout the year to local shelters.

Diversity in Support for Women

The Lakeshore Moms Facebook Group is passionate about diversity and acceptance. The supported projects are researched to ensure that the support is also going towards organizations that acknowledge and support the LGBTQ community and other diverse populations in our city.
